The Diesel Matic was a low-rise women’s denim model produced in multiple washes, fabrics and leg shapes during the 2000s. VDA’s archive of 12 physical examples shows that “Matic” did not describe one completely fixed silhouette: tagged size, fabric, wash, fit description and actual garment measurements all need to be read together.
This guide is based on 12 real Diesel Matic pairs documented by Vintage District Antwerp. When the guide was prepared, 9 were available and 3 had sold. The sample spans W24–W29, tagged lengths L30–L34, four recorded fit descriptions and garment-label production references from 2006, 2007 and 2009. It is a documented VDA sample, not a claim to represent every Matic ever produced.
Diesel Matic history: what can actually be documented
OTB’s official history states that Renzo Rosso founded Diesel in 1978 and describes denim innovation as central to the brand. For the Matic itself, VDA does not claim an official launch year because no primary Diesel launch record has been found.
What can be documented is earlier and stronger than the previous version of this guide suggested. A dated fashion-forum post from September 2006 records a shopper buying “jeans Diesel Matic”. Separately, denim writer and collector Lorna Burford wrote in 2011 that she obtained a Matic 81M at the very end of 2006 and later recalled wearing it in February 2007. The first is contemporary community evidence; the second is retrospective first-person evidence. Neither is an official launch announcement. The defensible conclusion is therefore: the Matic was already in consumer circulation by September 2006.
Retrospective wearer evidence describes early Matic examples as low rise and narrow through the leg. A later DenimBlog review compared a newer Matic 8B3 with older 2006–2007 pairs and reported a slimmer lower leg and roomier waist in the older examples. That comparison is useful historical fit evidence, but it remains an individual wearer’s observation rather than a factory specification.
What 12 real Matic garments tell us about fit
All 12 VDA examples are recorded as low rise, with front rises of 15–17 cm.
Slim, Slim Tapered, Straight Slim and Skinny appear in the documented sample.
VDA records 100% cotton, 98/2 cotton-elastane, 99/1 cotton-elastane and 75/25 cotton-elastomultiester compositions.
Several physical examples carry Made in Italy labels; origin is recorded from the garment, not inferred from style.
Flat waists in the sample run from 33 to 39 cm. Tagged W27 examples measure approximately 36–39 cm flat, while W26 examples measure approximately 35–37 cm. Leg openings range from 12 to 16 cm. These differences are why VDA records tagged size separately from measured size.
One apparent length anomaly has now been resolved. A black pair tagged W26 L32 measures only 70 cm inseam / 86 cm total length because the jeans were professionally shortened. VDA keeps those measurements because they describe the garment as it exists today, but the pair is not evidence of an unusually short factory L32. The other documented L32 examples measure approximately 80–85 cm at the inseam.
Same Matic, same 008GX wash code — different garments
Two VDA 008GX examples share the Matic name, a 2007 internal-label production reference, 98% cotton / 2% elastane composition and Made in Italy attribution, yet their recorded dimensions and fit descriptions are not identical.
| Field | 008GX W27 L34 | 008GX W29 L34 |
|---|---|---|
| Recorded fit | Slim | Straight Slim |
| Waist | 37 cm | 39 cm |
| Front rise | 16 cm | 17 cm |
| Inseam | 86 cm | 86 cm |
| Leg opening | 15 cm | 16 cm |
| Status at publication | Archived | Available |
The garments prove that the two documented examples are not dimensionally identical. They do not prove why. Size grading, production variation, wear, fabric recovery, fit labelling or individual garment history may contribute. The useful conclusion is narrower: model name and wash code alone cannot predict the exact measurements of a second-hand pair.
Diesel Matic wash codes documented by VDA
| Wash | VDA example | Documented notes |
|---|---|---|
| 0016U | W29 L34 · 2009 | Purple, Slim, 75% cotton / 25% elastomultiester. Year from internal label. |
| 0081P | W26 L32 | Blue, Slim Tapered, 99% cotton / 1% elastane, Made in Italy. No exact year assigned. |
| 008IG | W24 L32 + W26 L32 · 2007 | Two blue stretch examples. Both physical waistband labels read 008IG; the W26 record was corrected after rechecking the physical label. |
| 008GX | W27 L34 + W29 L34 · 2007 | Black faded, Slim / Straight Slim, 98% cotton / 2% elastane, Made in Italy. |
| 008N1 | W27 L32 | Dark blue, Slim, 100% cotton composition recorded by VDA, Made in Italy. Physical waistband label reads 008N1. |
| 008J7 | W27 L32 | Black stretch, Slim-Tapered. Physical label corrected an older VDA “Skinny” record. |
| 0089S | W28 L34 · 2006 | Black faded stretch, Made in Italy, archived. Year from internal label. |
| 008A8 | W26 L30 · 2009 | Black stretch, Skinny, 98% cotton / 2% elastane, archived. Composition and stretch physically rechecked; year from internal label. |
VDA also documents a dark-grey example and a black W26 L32 example for which no wash code is currently recorded. Missing codes are not reconstructed from colour alone.
Dating method: VDA transcribes the date line printed on internal garment labels rather than inferring a year from the wash code. The documentary examples shown here include 008IG dated 28-09-07, 008GX dated 10-05-07, 0016U dated 04-06-09 and 008A8 dated 02-07-09. The archived 0089S pair was physically verified by VDA as carrying a 2006 internal-label reference, but its dated label photograph is not reproduced in this guide.

How to choose a second-hand Diesel Matic
Start with rise and measured waist. VDA’s sample sits at 15–17 cm front rise, and nominal W sizes do not map to one exact flat-waist measurement.
Read the fabric label. The Matic name appears across several compositions, so comfort, recovery and structure can differ from pair to pair. Diesel’s own current Second Hand programme also lists Matic as a model in stretch construction, confirming that the model cannot be reduced to one universal material specification.
Check inseam, leg opening and alterations together. A tagged length can cease to describe the garment accurately after hemming, as the professionally shortened W26 L32 example demonstrates.
Treat wash codes as identification, not a fit guarantee. The two 008GX garments show why actual measurements remain essential even when model, wash, year reference, composition and origin overlap.
The Diesel Matic Denim Archive is the data-led companion to this article, preserving current and sold garments, measurements, fits, washes and product links.

Archive methodology: VDA records original product photography, physical labels and flat hand measurements. Tagged size is kept separate from measured size. Wash codes are transcribed exactly when readable; similar-looking characters are not normalised. Exact years are stated only when supported by internal production/date labels or other reliable documentary evidence. Alterations are disclosed instead of being treated as factory variation. Sold garments remain in the archive because their measurements and label data retain documentary value. Diesel and Matic are used descriptively; Vintage District Antwerp is an independent second-hand retailer and is not affiliated with Diesel S.p.A.
